Last Friday we attended the Wayne County Area Chamber of Commerce Spring Golf Classic at Forest Hills Country Club right here in Richmond, Indiana. It was a great day, the rain held off until the end, the wind gave us a nice breeze but not so much that we needed to stake down our tent and we got a chance to talk to some great people.

First, we want to say thank you to the Wayne County Area Chamber of Commerce for giving us the opportunity to sponsor and hole and set up our display so we could chat with everyone. We gave away some golf tees, pens and coozies and closest to the pin on our hole (#9 near the clubhouse) won a 19″ HD TV!

This Friday, May 21, 2011 we will be handing out coozies, tees and pens again for the Boys & Girls Club Golf Outing. Good luck to all those who are playing!

More Rain in the Forecast

If you are tired of this rain, you are not alone but your wishes for it to go away do not seem realistic either. Although temperatures will reach the mid-60′s, the thunderstorms will continue to roll in. There are more thunderstorms headed our way until Wednesday and we are currently under a Flash Flood Watch, you can see more forecast information here.

According to AccuWeather.com a Flash Flood Watch means that flooding of small streams, creaks and other drainage areas is possible within the watch area. People in the watch area should keep an eye on the weather and be prepared for immediate action should heavy rains and flooding occur or a flash flood warning be issued.

Here are some tips about what to do in the event of a flash flood.

Listen to the radio or television for information
Be aware that flash flooding can occur. If there is any possibility of a flash flood, move immediately to higher ground. DO NOT wait for instructions.
Be aware of streams, drainage channels, canyons and other areas to flood suddenly. Flash floods can occur in these with or without such typical warnings as rain clouds or heavy rain.

Ideas for a Fun Indoor Easter (Just in Case)

With the weather that may be heading our way, many families are planning for an indoor Easter. Here are some great indoor activities that will entertain everyone!

Host an Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt! After everyone has gotten their Easter baskets give them clues to find the eggs. This will give the kids some time to run around and burn off the energy they will have from being cooped up all day.

Musical Chairs, the Bunny Hop version. Everyone knows how to play musical chairs but let’s switch it up and play the bunny hop version. Give the kids bunny ears, turn on the music and get them hopping around. When the music stops grab a seat! Give the winner a special Easter treat.

Depending on the age of the children you could decorate cupcakes (<– this is a cute how-to video for Easter cupcakes). Fill bowls with decorations and let each person decorate their own cupcake. Choose to make these non-traditional cupcakes with Rice Krispies.

You could also decorate eggs with liquid food coloring or glitter, ribbons and stencils. Either way, the creativity will flow!

Play Easter Charades! This is fun for everyone. Hop like a bunny, chirp like a chick and come out of your shell! Fill an Easter Basket with names of animals for everyone to act out and let the fun begin!

Although this may be a soggy Easter you can still have plenty of fun!

Summer is Coming!

With all the rain it is hard to believe sunshine is right around the corner, but it is! We are Barnhizer & Associates, Inc. are really excited to get the summer started. We are sponsoring teams and golf outings and setting up booths at festivals and we CAN’T WAIT to get out in the sun!

This year we are sponsoring 5 sports teams, 2 baseball, 1 t-ball, 1 softball team and 1 volleyball team. We are excited to get out there and watch our teams play (and hopefully win) their games.

On opening day, which is May 14th, we will be watching the Eastside Girls Softball League play. One of our employees is coaching! We will be attending other games for all our teams throughout the summer. Check back to find out when and where.

As of right now we have 3 golf outings coming up this summer. We will have booths set up at the Pro’s Players Fore Parkinson’s Golf Outing, the Dayton Claims Association Golf Outing and the Spring Golf Classic. More information about these events can be found on our Facebook Events Page.

Finally, we will have a booth set up at the Liberty Smokin’ on the Water Barbeque Festival. This should be a fun one. Join us!

April Showers Bring May Flowers…and Water Damages

April is usually a very rainy month but if you are like me you are happy for anything but snow. Although the old saying talks about the good and pretty things April showers bring it doesn’t mention the damage all that water can do to your home. Today I am going to give you some tips on what to do if a water damage occurs in your house.

WATER DAMAGE DOs

DO CALL A PROFESSIONAL!
Remove as much water as possible by mopping or blotting.
Wipe furniture dry.
Place wood blocks, plastic wrap or foil between furniture legs and carpet to prevent staining or rusting on carpet.
Lift draperies off carpet and hong on drapery rod by looping through a coat hanger.
Remove oriental rugs or other coverings from the carpet.
Prop wet furniture cushions up for even drying. Check for possible “color bleeding.”
Use dehumidifiers as needed. The temperature should be above 60 degrees.
Use fans to circulate air to assist drying and fight mildew.
Open furniture drawers, closet doors, or luggage to enhance drying.
Remove painting and art objects to a dry location.
Punch small nail holes in sagging ceilings to allow water to drain (use a bucket to catch the water)
Remove damp books from shelves and spread out to dry.
Remove wet fabrics and dry ASAP. Hang furs and leather goods.
If damage is during the heating season, leave the heat on, in summer use the air conditioners.

WATER DAMAGE DON’Ts

Do not enter a room with standing water if the electricity is still on.
Do not use a household vacuum to remove water.
Do not use T.V. or appliances while on wet carpets or floors.
Do not lift tacked down carpets without professional help as this could promote shrinkage.

With these tips and the help of professionals you are more likely to salvage your belongings. Keep in mind that water damage can lead to more problems in the future. Calling a professional restoration company can help prevent these issues.

Welcome to the Barnhizer & Associates, Inc. official blog! This is an exciting time for us and we are looking forward to sharing it with you. If this is your first time hearing about us please visit our “Who We Are” page to learn more.

Two new people have joined the office staff this year and have helped grow our company already.

Justin Burkhardt has joined us as Director of Business Development. He is a graduate of Miami University Oxford and has worked with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. He has joined with the hopes to grow our business by introducing our company to those who don’t know about us through company visits, community involvement and events.

Dani Brabaw has joined us as the Director of Public Relations. She is a graduate from Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. She has joined us as our advertising and sponsorships contact person. She will also be leading our social media and community outreach endeavors.
